It is my greatest pleasure and happiness to serve as Under-Secretary-General for NMUN’25.
My name is Fatma Betül Bulut, but you can call me Betül. I study Political Science and International Relations at Istanbul University. I attended my first MUN at 14, totally clueless, our committee failed miserably. Six years later, I try my best to give delegates the experience I wish I had.
This year, our committee will address two important topics:
Agenda Item A: The Political and Economic Implications of Greenland’s Geopolitical Status and Resource Management. As climate change reshapes the Arctic, Greenland’s strategic value and resources are attracting global attention. This topic asks: who benefits, who decides, and how can sustainability be prioritized?
Agenda Item B: The Political and Legal Status of Unrecognized States. This issue explores what it means to exist without formal recognition and how it impacts peace, diplomacy, and human rights.
I’m here not just to coordinate, but because I believe in the impact of MUN. I’ve seen first-time delegates become confident speakers, and others stay up researching countries they’d never heard of before. If you’re nervous or unsure, that’s okay. All you need to do is show up, listen, learn, and try.

My name is Omar Soufi, and it is my esteemed honor to act as your SPECPOL committee Academic Assistant for this year’s NMUN. It is my privilege to belong to such an esteemed conference, and I am excited to have the opportunity to meet all of you as we make this experience unforgettable.
Since joining Model United Nations, I have been driven by an interest in international relations, diplomacy, and the power of discourse to create positive transformation. SPECPOL addresses several of the world’s most salient issues, and I especially anticipate leading your debates, seeing your ideas develop, and seeing the cooperation that makes MUN such an excellent and productive forum.
My purpose, as your Academic Assistant, is to provide an open, thought-provoking, and respectful environment in which all the delegates are free to speak, challenge concepts, and make new discoveries. It is my viewpoint that all opinions are of value. Far more than being present simply to chair, my aim is to help you derive the maximum value from the experienceyour first, or your tenth.
Most importantly, though, I am looking forward to several days of diplomacy, cooperation, and memories that are going to outlast the closing ceremony. It’s an honour to work with such a gifted pool of delegates, and I have no doubt that we are going to do something very special.

About the committee
The Special Political and Decolonization Committee (SPECPOL), also known as the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, is tasked with addressing issues related to decolonization, peacekeeping operations, outer space governance, and the political dimensions of international conflicts. SPECPOL plays a critical role in facilitating diplomatic discussions on territorial disputes, self-determination movements, and the challenges faced by unrecognized states. While its resolutions are non-binding, they serve as essential guidance for UN bodies and international stakeholders in managing global political concerns.
For this session, SPECPOL will focus on two pivotal topics that have significant political and economic implications. The first agenda, The Political and Economic Implications of Greenland’s Geopolitical Status and Resource Management, will explore the evolving role of Greenland in international affairs. As an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland is rich in natural resources, including rare earth minerals and fisheries, making it a focal point for global economic interests. This discussion will analyze the geopolitical dynamics of Greenland’s increasing autonomy, its economic development strategies, and the influence of major powers in Arctic affairs.
The second agenda, The Political and Legal Status of Unrecognized States, will examine the challenges faced by entities that claim sovereignty but lack widespread international recognition. These regions often exist in legal and political limbo, struggling with issues such as diplomatic isolation, economic instability, and governance legitimacy. The debate will focus on exploring pathways for conflict resolution, the role of international law in addressing claims of self-determination, and the broader impact of unrecognized states on global stability.
Through diplomatic discourse and policy-oriented discussions, SPECPOL aims to develop strategies that uphold international law, address territorial disputes, and promote peaceful resolutions to longstanding geopolitical challenges.
